United States Bankruptcy Chief Judge Catherine J. Furay of the Western District of Wisconsin has applied for reappointment to a new 14-year term, according to a March 20 notice. Her current term is set to expire on January 2, 2027, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit will consider her application.
The process matters because bankruptcy judges play a key role in overseeing cases that affect individuals and businesses facing financial distress. The position is a judicial officer of the United States District Court who exercises authority over actions, suits, or proceedings under Chapter 6 of Title 28 of the United States Code.
The notice invites comments from both the public and members of the bar regarding whether Chief Judge Furay should be reappointed. All comments will remain confidential and must be submitted in writing by May 4, 2026. Submissions should be sent to David E. Hollar, Circuit Executive for the Judicial Council of the Seventh Circuit, at their Chicago office or via email at ca07_circuit_executive@ca7.uscourts.gov.
Bankruptcy judges are appointed for renewable terms of fourteen years and handle all matters related to bankruptcy cases within their jurisdiction.
The final decision on reappointment will rest with the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit after reviewing all submitted comments.
