In a recent court filing, the Estate of Peter Schroeder, along with Charlee and Cheyanne Schroeder, have initiated a lawsuit against Juneau County and several officials from the Juneau County Justice Center. The plaintiffs allege that negligence and inadequate suicide prevention measures led to the wrongful death of Peter Schroeder while he was in custody at the Juneau County Jail. The complaint highlights multiple failures by jail staff to address Schroeder’s known mental health issues and suicidal tendencies, which culminated in his suicide on October 30, 2023. The plaintiffs are seeking compensatory damages for the loss of companionship and economic support, as well as punitive damages and injunctive relief to enforce better suicide prevention protocols.
