The United States District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin has announced that the current term of Magistrate Judge Nancy Joseph will expire on November 14, 2026. In accordance with legal requirements, a panel of citizens will be established to review whether Judge Joseph should be reappointed for another eight-year term.
Magistrate judges in this district are responsible for several key duties. These include conducting most preliminary proceedings in criminal cases, handling trials and dispositions of misdemeanor cases, managing various pretrial matters and evidentiary hearings as delegated by district judges, mediating civil cases assigned to district judges, presiding over civil trials and dispositions when all parties consent, and reviewing as well as issuing search and arrest warrants presented by the U.S. Attorney’s office or other federal law enforcement agencies.
The court is seeking input from both members of the bar and the public regarding Judge Joseph’s potential reappointment. Comments should be sent to Chief Judge Pamela Pepper at the United States District Court, Eastern District of Wisconsin, 517 E. Wisconsin Avenue, Milwaukee, WI 53202. All comments must be received by May 4, 2026.
