Timothy M. O’Shea, the United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced that Javaris Nunn, a 33-year-old resident of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, has been sentenced to 30 months in prison. Chief U.S. District Judge James D. Peterson delivered the sentence on June 24, 2025, following Nunn’s guilty plea on March 26, 2025, for possessing firearms and ammunition as a convicted felon.

The incident leading to Nunn’s arrest occurred on December 28, 2023. He was found as a rear passenger in a vehicle stopped due to the absence of a license plate. In proximity to Nunn was a backpack containing an unloaded Glock 42 .380 caliber handgun and a loaded Smith & Wesson M&P .45 caliber handgun with its serial number removed. Although Nunn denied any knowledge of these firearms, DNA evidence linked him to both guns.

Nunn has previous felony convictions including theft from a person, possession of a firearm by a felon, and robbery. These convictions legally prohibit him from possessing firearms or ammunition.

During sentencing, Judge Peterson acknowledged both Nunn’s difficult past and his positive traits but emphasized his extensive criminal record and the seriousness of his offense. Judge Peterson remarked that “Nunn carrying firearms was a recipe for disaster.” The judge ordered that the federal sentence run concurrently with a state revocation sentence and mandated three years of supervised release post-incarceration.

The charge against Nunn resulted from an investigation by the Dane County Sheriff’s Office and the ATF Madison Crime Gun Task Force. This task force includes federal agents from ATF along with state and local agency officers representing the Western District of Wisconsin. Assistant U.S. Attorney Corey Stephan prosecuted this case.

This prosecution is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative by the U.S. Justice Department aimed at reducing violent crime through collaboration between state and federal prosecutors alongside law enforcement agencies to tackle gun crimes involving felons illegally possessing firearms or ammunition as well as violent and drug-related offenses involving firearms.
