The Wisconsin Supreme Court has determined that the Catholic Charities Bureau and four of its affiliated organizations are primarily operated for religious purposes. As a result, these entities are exempt from contributing to the state unemployment insurance system.

This decision follows a review by the United States Supreme Court, which had previously sent the case back to the Wisconsin Supreme Court for additional proceedings. The matter will now return to the circuit court with specific instructions from the state’s highest court.

A copy of the order is available for public review.
